shows (finality)

so, a decision has been reached in the house that playing out tends to kill too much time, leaving none for recording, making videos/movies, writing about music, listening to music, reading, watching movies, and generally hanging out with each other and the cats. it’s also frustrating to play to 3 people, 1 of whom cares, but only slightly. Hiram’s been doing this for a long time and thinks it’s not worth it anymore. so, Nov. 6 at the Red Room is the last Harvey Girls live show (unless there’s a special occasion or, for some reason, some huge band wants us to open for them). We hope you can make it, but if not, no worries.

We’ll be recording and putting out videos, etc., still and have about an album’s worth ready that needs some tweaking. Also at some point, we’ll get to recording the “wolf album” (one that was started in 08, but never finished for various reasons… like dead hard drives).

Thanks to all who came and watched a show. Hope to see you ’round town.

Love,
Hiram and Melissa

what the kids are into these days

Steel Harmony play a caribbean steelband version of “Transmission” by Joy Division

choral version of “Gold Heart Mountaintop” by Guided by Voices (from Germany, I think).

PS22 sings “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House.  Also, “Pictures of You” by The Cure.

whatcha doin’?

Filed under: cheap fun, probably other — thg @ 7:28 pm

recording, recording, recording, trying to figure out the new system.

a lot of real life work.

recording.  reading some.  New Thomas Frank book.  Man, I (Hiram) miss the Baffler.

Oh, and some shows coming soon.  Tell you about that soon.

it’s been kind of a bummer summer.  but the lucke family visit was great.

Anyhoo, until next time, you can watch this if you like music and this is you like music and cartoons.

p.s.: Does anyone know why Bollywood musicals from a certain period are all blown out as far as sound goes?  I love it, but it sounds like an engineering problem (or is it just an analog to digital problem?  surely not).

If I were Stephen Malkmus…

…every so often I’d stop what I was doing and think, “Hot damn, I actually wrote Gold Soundz.

Then I would probably put on an Oxford shirt and admire my aquiline profile in a mirror.

Sing a Simple Song

Hiram started a blog about music called Sing a Simple Song.  The basic premise is that someone picks a song and writes a story about it.  Simple enough, right?  So head on over.  It’s just started, but there’s a couple of tunes up already.

Take care of yourselves and get plenty of rest.

August Shows

There’s a couple of rock shows we’re doing in August here in Portland:

Aug. 14th at Kelly’s with wow & flutter and One Million Teeth.  THG is opening, so 9:30 ish.

Aug. 18th at The Hawthorne Theater.  This is a KUFO Viva La Luna benefit.  Should be fun and maybe all ages.

Other than that we’ve been setting up the new recording equipment and getting the basement room set up as a “studio” once again.  All the busyness with business is over for awhile, so hopefully there’ll be something new soonish.

Love y’all,
H and M

Franklin Ajaye

We just sent this album to a friend, but thought we’d share it all over because it’s nowhere to be found on the net.  Franklin Ajaye’s “Don’t Smoke Dope, Fry Your Hair”.  Here’s a bit about him.

They don’t mention that he was The Fly in Carwash.

It’s from ‘76 and is full of foul language and drug references, so, you know, it’s a fave.  Here’s the sendspace link.  It only lasts a little while.

I’m not sure how I could have spent so much time on the internet over the years and never seen slipcue before, but I’m glad I found it.  Amazing lists of brazilian, hillbilly (he calls it “hick”), and world music among other things.  Check it out ‘cuz it’s totally worth it.
